Honors 11: Dutchman by Amiri Baraka

We started the day by debriefing your conversations regarding Amiri Baraka’s “The Revolutionary Theater” before we took a quick quiz on the play Dutchman read for today. Afterwards, we watched Baraka read his poem “Why is we American?” and listened to his historical contextualization of the play. We used both to continue to inform our understanding of Amiri’s project/the play, and we then got into small groups to work to answer these close reading questions. We will finish and discuss tomorrow before delving into existentialist tenets found in the play and a closer characterization of Clay and Lula along with watching some film clips. No homework. Here’s the poem being performed by Baraka titled “Somebody Blew up America”–the reason he was stripped of his NJ Poet Laureate title. And finally, here’s the response from Muhammad Ali in a 1971 interview concerning the idea that “all white people are not racist.”
