Honors 11: “On The American Scholar”

We talked a bit about Emerson’s “On The American Scholar” to begin. We started by writing down what we believed to be Emerson’s claim, and we then found a few supporting details/quotes that backed up his argument. You shared with a partner before I gave you this 2011 Gary Gutting piece titled “What is College For?”. You read it quickly, and we then moved into our debate regarding the importance of a formal, continued education or lack there of. We will need to finish tomorrow and wrap up then.

Your homework is to read and annotate these three poems by Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg (I will tell you more about them tomorrow). We will then do an AP Lit practice response paper regarding “Song of the Open Road” and one of the other two. Here are the directions if you would like to take a look.

Finally, the scavenger hunt I am assigning on Wednesday that is due Monday the 11th has changed slightly. Here are the updated directions.
