Honors 11: “Incident”

I was not there today, but the sub was told to get you into groups to share out what you learned about Countee Cullen and Amiri Baraka (partly using “A Post-Racial Anthology?”) from homework the night before that was to be written on the bottom of each of their respective poems. You were then to go about analyzing/explicating first Cullen’s and then Baraka’s, taking notes and filling the page. I asked you to remember different poetry explication methods from our transcendentalism unit, like SOAPS (Speaker, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, Subject), but there are many ways of looking at the poem (diction, punctuation, style, tone, etc.). You then shared ideas with another group or the class as a whole. I wanted you to also write a brief response to each poem. The “Incident” poems will be turned in Monday.

Next, we watched some college students do a round table discussion concerning the poem, and you used that to add to any of your notes.

For homework you are reading “The Revolutionary Theater” by Jones/Baraka and emailing me ONE QTI (Question, Thought, or Insight) by midnight on Sunday concerning the piece. Feel free to draw connections to “Incident”, other readings, Fences, etc. within your QTI.
