Honors 11: Global Labor–Globalization

This is for Tuesday/Wednesday.

I introduced the topics we would choose from when we begin researching for our research essay. We then moved into looking into a few related topics (consumerism/commercialization, global labor, the global economy, exploitation of workers, etc.) after listening to Noam Chomsky, American linguist, activist, philosopher, etc. define globalization for us.

We watched these three advertisements first and took copious notes on what we noticed. We then watched this NY Times Op-Doc that stood in stark contrast to the advertisements, titled “The Deadly Cost of Fashion” by Ismail Ferdous and took notes/discussed what we saw/heard. After, we entered into an entirely different narrative by Leslie Chang, titled “The Voices of China’s Workers.” The goal was to then be able to put these sources into conversation through the analytical work you did while watching. You wrote a paragraph of analysis as if it were a body paragraph of a hypothetical research essay (similar to one you will be writing). You worked to synthesize at least two of the sources viewed today, analyzing within a cohesive paragraph. You submitted this 7-ish sentence paragraph to me today.

Here’s the Barber reading titled “Jihad vs. McWorld” that you are annotating/reading for Monday.
