Honors 11: Emerson and Thoreau + Poetry Explication

We began the day by discussing “On the American Scholar” and debriefing the debate from yesterday. We also took notes on Ralph Waldo Emerson.

You were then given a poetry assignment regarding two of Thoreau’s poems titled “My Life Has Been The Poem” and “Conscience.” I asked you to do the following: 1. annotate/make comments throughout 2. Identify any unknown vocabulary 3. Identify any poetic devices 4. Identify any transcendentalist threads and 5. Write a thesis/claim for each poem OR write one thesis/claim about a connecting idea between both poems as if you were to write an analytical response. Feel free to refer back to the poetry explication methods given to you yesterday to help in your annotation.

You were then given these Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg poems to read and annotate for tomorrow. If you have not done so, tomorrow will be difficult.

And I’m sorry this is a lot, but I also need you to read Ch. 1 of Emerson’s “Nature.”

Whitman was amazing. I like how he combine real life and nature. Using the balance of Native American belief and modern ways. This is the time I read this piece. Thank you for showing me the the Whitman thoughts on my favorite topic.
